ADAPTIVE RE-USE LONG STREET WORKSHOPS

2013

Considering the London housing crisis this project refurbishes three 4-storey light industrial buildings in Hackney to create 62 family homes and 2000m2 commercial office space. The building envelopes are reskinned to improve insulation and energy efficency, winter gardens are added to the south elevations to take advantage of solar gain and natural ventilation, and to increase the floor area of each dwelling. Original construction is precast concrete frame and brick, wintergardens are in steel frame and floor to ceiling glazing, with a steel framed, timber clad fifth floor added.

Analysis of the refurbishment and adaptation of many building types informed the the choices of technologies, materials and design
